It’s Time for a New Cool Roof!
With temps throughout the Midwest near record highs, it’s a good time to consider a new energy-efficient roof. Cool roofs on commercial buildings can increase the life of the roof and reduce building operating costs.
A cool, energy-efficient roof is white or light-colored and reflects light and heat. Black flat roofs absorb and transfer heat into the building. A reflective roof provides a facility with lower summertime air conditioning costs and, for warehouses (for example) or other commercial buildings that are not air-conditioned, a cooler and more productive working environment.
On a hot day, the surface of a black roof can be at least 70 degrees hotter than the ambient air temperature. A cool roof may be only 20 degrees warmer. HVAC units on a dark roof have to work a lot harder to cool the hot, hot air that’s hovering on a dark roof.
Here’s the really good news: the cost for a new reflective roof is comparable to that for a dark roof, but a cool energy-efficient roof has a shorter payback period because it will save you money in energy costs.
